New Aero features in Windows7

Under the hood, Windows 7 is a lot like Vista. Indeed, most of what gets us hot and not-so-bothered about is what's on top: When it comes to look and feel, the new UI is the biggest step forward since Windows 95.

TASKBAR
The taskbar is our favorite new UI element of Windows 7. It's the biggest change from Windows past, and in our view, the best. But it might result in some confusion at first because it groups applications that are open and those that aren't into one big party—the theory is that it shouldn't matter if it's already running or not if you wanna open it. That might kinda remind you of OS X's Dock, but it works a bit differently and definitely still operates on the Windows paradigm. Combined with Aero Peek, which makes every window on the desktop transparent except the one you're highlighting at the moment, you can find any window nearly instantly, no matter how many windows your desktop is buried under.

Here's how it works: When you hold your cursor the icon of an open program in the taskbar (it'll have a hint of gloss it, while unopened apps are dull and non-glassy), a live preview thumbnail will pop up for every window it has open, and in applications coded for it, like Internet Explorer, a thumbnail of every open tab, too. When you hover over a thumbnail, it brings that window to the front, and makes everything else transparent, so you know it's the one you're looking for (or not).

Jump Lists
In applications coded to take advantage of the jump list, when you right-click an icon, you'll get a pop-up menu where you can quickly select common functions. In Internet Explorer, it shows your recent browsing history; in Windows Media Player, it'll let you play recent videos; and Windows Explorer will give you quick access to pinned and frequently used folders and files. Expect jump lists to be more useful as new apps are released for Windows 7 that build functions into the jumplist.

Aero Peek

Aero Peek, which we talked about above, is a big part of what makes the new taskbar so useful. When you highlight the thumbnail preview of an app window that you might wanna open, it makes every other open window transparent, so you get a clear view of the window you're looking at. Or, if you highlight a small button on the bottom right corner of the taskbar, every window will become see-through, for a quick peek at your desktop or gadgets, Windows 7's free-floating widgets (more on those below).

Pinning
Gone is the Quick Launch bar, where you used to store shortcut buttons to your favorite apps. Now they just hang out on the taskbar with open applications. When you "pin" something, like an app or folder, it's got a permanent spot on the taskbar for easy access. When the app is running or the folder is open, the icon has a glossy sheen over it. One quirk with folders: If you try to pin more than one to the taskbar, they're all collapsed into a single "Windows Explorer" icon. Also, if you pin a file to the taskbar, it's actually pinned to the icon of the program that opens it, so you'll have to right-click that icon to pop up the jump list (see below) and select it from there.

WINDOWS
Here's where we really get into what makes Windows 7's UI really special and so different from past Windows versions—the way you handle and manage windows, and by extension, applications. It'll change your life! Maybe! Okay, not really. But it will give you a warm feeling in your tummy. Or that could be the Mexican food you ate last night.

Aero Shake
Shake, rattle and roll, sucka. Aero Shake is the new UI thinger that's useless-but-neat. Grab whatever window you want to be the only one you see, and shake it. Everything else will be minimized. Shaking again will revive all of the windows. Aero Peek, which we talk about above, is better.

Maximize/Minimize aka Aero Snap

Maybe it's just a side effect of splitting my time on a Mac, but I don't really maximize windows that much anymore, and I think the new Windows UI makes you less likely to do it, too, since it's easier to deal with having tons of windows open and scattered around your screen. But if you do wanna make a window of an open app or document swallow your entire monitor, just grab it and drag it to the top of the screen. You'll get a slick little animation indicating that when you let go of the mouse button, the window will blow up to cover your whole screen. To unmaximize, just grab the top of window and pull down—it'll instantly go back to its original size. Snazzy, no?

Also, on the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, there's a sliver of button you should check out. When you hover over it, it'll make every open window go all transparent so you can see your desktop. Click the button, and everything will be minimized.

Left/Right Alignment aka Aero Snap, Part Deux
Another Aero snap feature: Drag a window to the far left or right of your screen, and when your cursor touches the edge, it'll make that window take up exactly half of your screen. Nice, especially on widescreen monitors.

DESKTOP/BASICS
Really, Windows 7's isn't too different from the Windows you've known and loved (or loathed) for years. It just has a handful of new UI features scattered throughout that make it easier than ever to multitask with Windows, with the side effect of making it look modern and kinda neat, too. Here's a rundown of the new ooie GUI hotness and what it does.

Gadgets

Gadgets, widgets, whatever you want to call them, they're little mini-applications strewn across your desktop that do useful things like tell you how cold it is outside, in case your apartment is like mine, where you leave all the windows open because your radiator is crazy hot and you're almost fooled into thinking it's 70 degrees outside, but really it's like 20. In a former life (i.e., Vista) they were like little ducks in a row, sitting on the sidebar by default, but now they're free-floating on your desktop, where they're more useful.

Themes
Microsoft has made themes—the unified look across your PC, like the color of windows and your wallpaper—more prominent than ever in Windows 7, and much easier to save, download and swap out too, depending on your mood. Just right-click on your desktop and press personalize, then you can change them, or Microsoft will direct you to where you can download more.

Shortcuts
There's a slew of new keyboard hotkey shortcuts that use the Windows key, making it feel useful for the first time ever. (And I've been using Windows for like, ever.) Two you should memorize right now: Win+T cycles through apps on your taskbar for quick access to programs, and Win+G brings all of your gadgets to the front.

Windows Explorer Preview
The preview pane was actually in Windows Vista, but Microsoft made it hard to find. Not so in Windows 7. Just press the little button above. It shoots out to the side a preview image of whatever file you've got selected, like a picture, movie, or even yes, documents, so you don't have to open 'em to see what's inside.

How to setup Speech Recognition in Windows 7

Windows 7 has many features designed to let the user interact with the desktop interface in place of the keyboard and mouse. One feature is touch, another is speech recognition

Wat is Speech Recognition?

Just as the keyboard allows one to enter commands into the computer, and the mouse to deliberately change location where you want to type or to launch a file, speech is a new dimension of interface control that focus on commands, not location.

What if an application does not present “commands”? It can still be controlled by overlaying numbers above the interface, a geography control. To activate a function one only needs to speak the number. A mousegrid can be used to relocate the mouse in the appropriate grid location. The grid has nine zones, and when a zone is selected, the mouse moves to that zone, and a new nine zone grid is created. The speaker speaks the number again and keeps repeating the process until the mouse is put in the appropriate location.

How to use Speech Recognition

Before you can use the speech feature, there are some things that must be done. Unlike keyboards and mice, where the finger pressure is converted into a constant electronic pressure, voice has variations. So the software must be trained.

First of all, there is a hardware issue. One needs a very good microphone. Avoid cheaper microphones since they tend to pick up a lot of background noise.
Secondly create a voice profile and train the computer to identify the speaker’s voice and pronunciation. There is a speech training tutorial.

Key Features of Speech Recognition

Speech recognition is separated into the following categories:

Multiple languages: Windows Speech Recognition in Windows Vista is available in eight languages/dialects: English, French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.
“How do I” help: If one says “How do I…” do, or make, or find … a task that one wants to perform with the computer, the software will respond accordingly. For example, “How do I change my desktop theme?”
Correction: One is able to fix incorrectly recognized words by selecting from alternatives provided for the dictated phrase or word, or by spelling the word.
Dictation: Address e-mails and documents by dictation; make corrections, and save the work.
Adaptation: Modification and adaptation to speaking styles and accents. The software learns and improves the interaction with the computer
Command: This is the “Say what you see” feature. It enables one to naturally control applications and complete tasks. Among such them are launching documents or applications, formatting, saving or deleting documents.
Disambiguation: Ambiguous words and phrasings can be resolved with a user interface for clarification. If something can be misinterpreted, the software can clarify it.

Review your computer reliability and Problem history in Windows 7

This will show you how to open and use Reliability Monitor to review Windows 7 reliability and problem history to help resolve issues on your computer.

Note

Reliability Monitor is an advanced tool that measures hardware and software problems and other changes to your computer. It collects 24 hours of data before it displays any results and calculates the stability index that ranges from 1 (the least stable) to 10 (the most stable). You can use the index to help evaluate the reliability of your computer by reviewing the reported application failures, Windows 7 failures, Miscellaneous failures, Warnings, and Information. Any change you make to your computer or problem that occurs on your computer affects the stability index.

EXAMPLE: Reliability Monitor
NOTE: You can tell your Index score (scales from 1 to 10, 10 is the best score) by looking at how the chart line ends in the upper right corner boxed in red below compared to the scale of 10 to 1 on the left upper corner boxed in red below.

Here's How:

1. Click on the Action Center icon in the notification area of the taskbar, and click on Open Action Center. (See screenshot below)

Next to View by, click on Days, Weeks, Month, or Year to view the stability index over a specific period of time that you want.
In the upper pane, click on any event on the graph to view its reliability details in the lower pane.
Under the lower Reliability details pane, you can click on an available link under the Actions column. For example, View technical details to see more details about the reported problem.
At the bottom, click on the View problem reports and responses link to view only the problems that have occurred on your computer. This view does not include the other computer events that show up in Reliability Monitor, such as events about software installation.
At the bottom, click on the Save reliability history link, to save this Reliablilty Monitor report as an .xml file to give to support if needed.

How to use Windows 7 System Restore (Repair option)

After you install software it makes changes to the registry or delete files, and sometimes you may even modify some settings knowingly or unknowingly. It is possible that the system may start crashing or become unstable. If that happens you can undo all this changes and restore the system to earlier time by using System Restore Utility.

What does System restore do?

It is like undo.It puts your computer back to a previous state of use that was available before you had problems. It does this by periodically taking a snapshot of your system. These snapshots are called restore points.
Restores points are created when you make any significant changes, like adding new applications or installing a driver. But you can also manually create restore points. The upshot is that these Restore points can help you restore the whole system back to a previous post.

Problems with System Restore in Previous Versions of Windows

Both XP and Vista had similar issues with system restore. It was an all or nothing environment. Son if you needed to use it, you were forced to restore the full system. You also weren’t able to look inside your System restore files, so you could not restore just one single file or folder. You also cannot restore specific part of your like just System files, or User data.

Windows 7 System Restore

Windows 7 System Restore utility has now merged with the Windows Backup utility. You can now use System Restore with Advance recovery to restore the system using previously created System Images or even restore your computer to its original settings.

How to Enable / Disable Autorun for Removable Media in Windows 7

This tutorial will show you how to enable the AutoRun feature of AutoPlay in Windows 7, which is disabled by default, for external drives.

Note

Autoplay feature enable Windows to pop up the default options when a removable drives like USB flash drive or CD ROM is inserted.

Warning

Autoplay feature is, by default, disabled in Windows 7 due to security reasons. Many malwares like Conficker Worm can autorun on your computer if an infected USB drive or CD is inserted.However, its useful to enable autoplay as it gives quick access to default choices when any removable drive is inserted. Anyways, use it at your risk.

How to use BitLocker Drive Encryption option in Windows 7

Bit Locker encrypts your drives so others cannot access them without a password. With an increasing number of key drives at our disposal, loss of sensitive data is becoming more of a threat. In this guide, you’ll learn how to encrypt your thumb drive with BitLocker to go, which comes with Windows 7.

Encrypting Your Thumb Drive with BitLocker to go

To encrypt your thumb drive, do the following:

Plug your thumb drive into a USB port
Click the Start button, type BitLocker, and click on BitLocker Drive Encryption
Next to your thumb drive, click Turn on BitLocker
If your thumb drive is compatible, BitLocker will prepare it
Choose a password and click continue
Either save your recovery key (used if you forget your password) or print a copy of it out
If you save the file, ensure it’s stored somewhere safe
Click Next
Confirm your chosen settings and password and click Start Encrypting
Your drive will now be encrypted
If you have a large thumb drive, this may take a long time

Verifying Your Thumb Drive is Encrypted Properly

When protecting your data or anything you own, it is important to ensure the protection actually works. I took my thumb drive out of the Windows Seven machine and put it in a Vista machine. You should do the following too, to ensure your data is protected.

To verify your data is protected, do the following:

Put your thumb drive in another PC and try to open the files. You should see a BitLocker setup file, which shows BitLocker is not installed on the computer you’re testing on. If you have BitLocker installed on the machine, you will be prompted for a password (see the next step.)
If you have BitLocker installed on the PC you are testing on, you will be prompted for your password
Enter your password to get to your data

Removing BitLocker Encryption

If you would like to decrypt your drive, do the following:

Plug your thumb drive into a USB port
Click the Start button, type BitLocker, and click on BitLocker Drive Encryption
Next to your thumb drive, click Turn Off BitLocker, and click Decrypt
This will take some time
Your drive is no longer encrypted

How to login as Administrator in Widows 7

How to take System Image Backups in Windows 7

System images are exact images of the drive that Windows is installed on and are used by Windows 7’s Backup and Restore tool. You can read more about Windows 7’s Backup and Restore in my Backup and Restore in Windows 7 - What it should have been in Vista! and Restoring Files with Backup and Restore in Windows 7 articles. A system image includes Windows and system settings, programs and files. You can use a system image to restore the contents of your computer, or the drive that Windows is installed on, if your hard drive or computer ever stops working. When you restore your computer from a system image, it is a complete restoration and you can't choose individual items to restore, and all of your current programs, system settings, and files are replaced. Restoring Windows 7 systems with System images and Backup and Restore tool is also addressed in an upcoming article.

After installing Windows 7, it's important to install the correct hardware drivers to get your video, sound, network, and other components working properly.

Note: Although this type of backup includes your personal files, remember that because of the fact that they cannot be used to restore individual items to restore, I strongly recommend that you regularly back up your files using the Backup and Restore.

Note: If you have more than one drive or partition on your computer, a system image is only made of the drive or partition that Windows is installed on.

Open Backup and Restore by going to the Control Panel and typing “backup” in the search box. One of the results will lead you to it.

You can also type “backup” on the Start Menu search box, and again, one of the results will lead you to it.

You can also run the following command from the Run or search box option:

sdclt.exe

Naturally, you’d want to perform a manual or scheduled backup of files and folders on your computer. So when you set up a backup by using the Backup and Restore tool, you can let Windows choose what is backed up or you can select the individual folders and drives that you want to back up.

Note: If the destination drive is formatted using the NTFS file system and has enough disk space, a system image of your programs, Windows, and all drivers and registry settings will automatically be included in the backup.

However, this article is about working with System Image backups, so we’ll click on the “Create an Image Backup” link on the left hand side of the Backup and Restore tool.

Backup and Restore will look for a backup destination. Read more about this in my Disk Considerations when using Windows 7 Backup and Restore article.

Choose your backup destination and press Next.

Read and confirm your settings by clicking on the “Start Backup” button.

Creation of the system image will begin, and you’ll notice the progress bar.

Note: Unlike regular file and folder backups with Backup and Restore, a System Image uses a VHD file type for the backup media.

When finished, you’ll get a confirmation window.

Next, make sure you safely keep this backup, you’ll need it in case your computer stops working and you decide to restore it. Read my upcomoing "Restoring Windows 7 Systems with System Images and Backup and Restore" article for more information.

Note: You can also create a System Recovery Disk for use when the system is so badly messed that it cannot boot even in safe mode. More on that in a separate article.

How to enable Godmode in Windows 7

Windows 7 users are all abuzz about the OS and its GodMode. If you haven't heard of it, GodMode is a feature that was revealed by CNet's Microsoft Correspondent, Ina Fried. GodMode is a folder that brings together a long list of customization settings allowing you to change all your settings from one place. Neat huh? It's very easy to enable and damn useful if you tweak things around a lot.

I've broken it down into five-step process to avoid confusion:

Step 1: Right click.

Step 2: Click create folder.

Step 3: Name your sparkly, new folder this, "GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}" and press enter.

Step 4: Blink as the folder changes form to look like the control panel.

How to create Recovery Disk for Windows 7 from Recovery option

As was the case with Vista when Windows becomes unbootable, you can use system recovery tool, in Windows 7, the installation DVD options for recover the system.

Windows 7 also incorporates a very interesting feature: the creation of a repair disk directly from the system.

In Control Panel, click System and Security (System and Security), and then click Backup and Restore (Backup and Restore).
In the left pane, click Create a system recovery disk (Create a system recovery disc);
Insert a blank CD in the DVD, and then click Create Disk (Create Disc).
The disc is created is a few seconds:
To check, reboot the system on the DVD player.
After loading the files, select the language, and then click Next (Next).
Windows 7 installed the system is found, click Next (Next):

Set Up and Use XP Mode in Windows 7

We've shown you how to upgrade to the Windows 7 release candidate and walked you through what's new when you get there; now let's take a look at how to enable Windows 7 XP Mode.

Windows 7's new XP Mode lets you seamlessly run virtualized applications alongside your regular Windows 7 applications—so your outdated software will continue to work. Before we begin, you'll want to make sure your system meets the requirements:

Processor: Processor capable of hardware virtualization, with AMD-V™ or Intel® VT turned on in the BIOS.
Memory: 2GB of memory recommended.
Hard disk requirement: 20MB hard disk space for installing Windows Virtual PC. Additional 15GB of hard disk space per virtual Windows environment recommended.

Make sure that your processor supports hardware virtualization, and double-check that the hardware virtualization setting is enabled in your BIOS (the setting is often not enabled although your processor may be supported). You can use the official Intel Processor Identification Utility if you are running Intel, or you can can use previously mentioned SecurAble to determine whether or not your AMD or Intel processor will support XP Mode.

Next, you'll need to install two software packages on your PC:

Download and install the Windows Virtual PC Beta, which is the virtualization software that powers "XP Mode".
Download and install the Windows XP Mode Beta, which is a specially crafted XP virtual machine.

Once you've completed those steps and restarted your computer, run the Virtual Windows XP item in the start menu, add in a password and make sure to choose to remember the credentials if you want the integration features to work smoothly.

Once the wizard is complete, hopefully you will see a dialog that sets up XP for use, which will take quite a while. If you receive a message that hardware virtualization is not enabled, reboot your computer and check that the BIOS option is enabled, usually found under the advanced settings page.

If all goes well, you'll see a Virtual Windows XP window, complete with a notification to install antivirus software—since XP Mode is nothing more than Windows XP in a virtual machine, you should take the advice and install your favorite antivirus application, especially if you'll be downloading files in the VM.

At this point you will need to install your applications in Windows XP, and make sure to choose "All Users" anytime you are asked who to install the software for—the integration features won't work with software that installs just for your user account. If you can't install for everybody, you can simply choose "Open All Users" on the start menu, and copy a shortcut to the application into the start menu's programs folder.

Once your applications are installed and shortcuts are in the All Users start menu, they will magically show up in the Windows 7 start menu under the Windows Virtual PC -> Virtual Windows XP Applications folder.

Depending on the state of the virtual machine, you will be prompted to close it in order to switch into "virtual application" mode. If the virtual machine was hibernated, you will see a slightly different prompt, but the general idea is that it can't be running while you are in application mode.

And now, success! The Chrome window in the front is an XP-mode window—you'll notice that windows running in XP mode don't seem to take advantage of the slick Windows 7 drop-shadows, and you won't see a thumbnail preview in the taskbar or Alt-tab.

How to install Windows XP over Windows 7 in a dual boot

This guide tells you ‘How to dual boot Windows 7 and Windows XP’ with Windows 7 installed first. This case is applicable for users who have Windows 7 pre-installed on ‘C’ and want to install XP on their ‘D’ partition.

The process for this is same as we did for Windows XP & Vista. Follow the simple steps below to install XP after Windows 7.

1) Make a clean Install of Windows XP on ‘D’ partition of your hard drive. Assuming, Windows 7 is installed on ‘C’ partition.

2) After restarting system, you will directly boot into Windows XP. That’s because XP writes its bootloader over Windows 7. So, we need to restore the Win 7 bootloader.

3) To restore 7, you need to Boot from the Windows 7 DVD and “Repair your computer”. Check this article “How to Perform a Startup Repair in Windows 7” to perform repair.

4) After repairing, your system will restart and boot into Windows 7.

5) Download and Install EasyBCD on your Windows 7 to add boot entry for XP.

6) Launch the app and go to Add/Remove Entries. Under “Add an Entry” open the Windows tab and select the Type as “Windows NT/2k/XP/2k3”.

Associate an icon with a drive

To set the icon of any drive (hard disk, cd rom or anything else) with a letter (C:\ etc.), run REGEDIT (Start -> Run -> regedit)

Next, the worm downloads a file from the following URL and executes it:
[http://]/]trafficconverter.biz/4vir/antispyware/loada[REMOVED]

The worm then creates a http server on the compromised computer on a random port, for example:
http://[EXTERNAL IP ADDRESS OF INFECTED MACHINE]:[RANDOM PORT]

The worm then sends this URL as part of its payload to remote computers.

Upon successful exploitation, the remote computer will then connect back to this URL and download the worm.

In this way, each exploited computer can spread the worm itself, as opposed to downloading from a predetermined location.

Next, the worm connects to a UPnP router and opens the http port.

It then attempts to locate the network device registered as the Internet gateway on the network and opens the previously mentioned [RANDOM PORT] in order to allow access to the compromised computer from external networks.

The worm then attempts to download a data file from the following URL:
[http://]/]www.maxmind.com/download/geoip/database/GeoIP.[REMOVED]

The worm spreads by exploiting the Microsoft Windows Server Service RPC Handling Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (BID 31874).

Next, the worm attempts to contact the following sites to obtain the current date:

http://www.ask.com
http://www.msn.com
http://www.yahoo.com
http://www.google.com
http://www.baidu.com

It uses the date information to generate a list of domain names.

The worm then contacts these domains in an attempt to download additional files onto the compromised computer.

Manual Removal
The following instructions pertain to all current and recent Symantec antivirus products, including the Symantec AntiVirus and Norton AntiVirus product lines.

Disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP).
Update the virus definitions.
Run a full system scan.
Delete any values added to the registry.

For specific details on each of these steps, read the following instructions.

1. To disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP)
If you are running Windows Me or Windows XP, we recommend that you temporarily turn off System Restore. Windows Me/XP uses this feature, which is enabled by default, to restore the files on your computer in case they become damaged. If a virus, worm, or Trojan infects a computer, System Restore may back up the virus, worm, or Trojan on the computer.

Windows prevents outside programs, including antivirus programs, from modifying System Restore. Therefore, antivirus programs or tools cannot remove threats in the System Restore folder. As a result, System Restore has the potential of restoring an infected file on your computer, even after you have cleaned the infected files from all the other locations.

Also, a virus scan may detect a threat in the System Restore folder even though you have removed the threat.

Note: When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed, reenable System Restore by following the instructions in the aforementioned documents.

2. To run a full system scan

Run a full system scan.
If any files are detected, follow the instructions displayed by your antivirus program.

After the files are deleted, restart the computer in Normal mode and proceed with the next section.

Warning messages may be displayed when the computer is restarted, since the threat may not be fully removed at this point. You can ignore these messages and click OK. These messages will not appear when the computer is restarted after the removal instructions have been fully completed. The messages displayed may be similar to the following:

Title: [FILE PATH]
Message body: Windows cannot find [FILE NAME]. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

4. To delete the value from the registry
Important: Symantec strongly recommends that you back up the registry before making any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify the specified subkeys only. For instructions refer to the document: How to make a backup of the Windows registry.

Click Start > Run.
Type regedit
Click OK.

Note: If the registry editor fails to open the threat may have modified the registry to prevent access to the registry editor. Security Response has developed a tool to resolve this problem. Download and run this tool, and then continue with the removal.
Navigate to and delete the following registry entry:

The Stop 0x24 message indicates that a problem occurred within Ntfs.sys, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. A similar Stop message, 0x23, exists for the file allocation table (FAT16 or FAT32) file systems.
Possible Resolutions:
Malfunctioning SCSI and Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) hardware or drivers can also adversely affect the system's ability to read and write to disk, causing errors. To test hard disk or volume integrity
Method 1:
In the Run dialog box, in the Open box type:

The system might not actually be out of PTEs, but a contiguous memory block of sufficient size is not available to satisfy a driver or application request. Another cause is excessive demands for system PTE by applications. This situation is more common in server environments. Windows XP Professional provides a registry entry, SystemPages, that you can use to increase the number of PTEs allocated.

Do not edit the registry unless you have no alternative. The registry editor bypasses standard safeguards, allowing settings that can damage your system, or even require you to reinstall Windows. If you must edit the registry, back it up first...
To increase the number of PTEs allocated in the registry
In the Run dialog box, and in the Open box, type: regedit
In the registry editor, navigate to the subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management.
Double-click on PagedPoolSize and SystemPages to view the value for each entry.
If PagedPoolSize is not zero, assign a value of 0.
If SystemPages is not zero, assign a value of 40000 for systems with 128 MB (or less) of memory, or 110000 for systems with 128 MB to 256 MB of memory. For systems with more memory, do not increase the SystemPages value above 110000 without contacting Microsoft technical support.
Click OK, and then close the registry editor.
Restart your computer.

Stop 0x00000050 or PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

The Stop 0x50 message indicates that requested data was not in memory. The system generates an exception error when using a reference to an invalid system memory address. Defective memory (including main memory, L2 RAM cache, video RAM) or incompatible software (including remote control and antivirus software) might cause Stop 0x50 messages.

Stop 0x50 messages can also occur after installing faulty drivers or system services. If the file name is listed, you need to disable, remove, or roll back that driver. If not, disable the recently installed service or application to determine if this resolves the error. If this does not resolve the problem, contact the hardware manufacturer for updates. Using updated drivers and software is especially important for network interface cards, video adapters, backup programs, multimedia applications, antivirus scanners, and CD mastering tools. If an updated driver is not available, attempt to use a driver from a similar device in the same family. For example, if printing to a Model 1100C printer causes Stop 0x50 errors, using a printer driver meant for a Model 1100A or Model 1000 might temporarily resolve the problem.

The Stop 0x79 message indicates that the hardware abstraction layer (HAL) and the kernel type for the computer do not match. This error most often occurs when ACPI firmware settings are changed. For example, you might install Windows XP on an x86-based computer with the firmware ACPI enable option enabled and later decide to disable it. This error can also result when mismatched single and multi-processor configuration files are copied to the system.
Possible Resolutions:
A Stop 0x79 message occurs when the system is using out-of-date Ntoskrnl.exe or Hal.dll files. This can occur after manual repairs that involve copying incorrect files to the system. This error also occurs when using mismatched files, such as copying a multiprocessor HAL on to a system using a single-processor kernel (or vice versa). The kernel and HAL files for single-processor and multiprocessor systems are stored on the Windows XP Professional operating system CD using two different file names. For example, the single and multi-processor versions of the kernel, named Ntoskrnl.exe and Ntkrnlmp.exe respectively. Setup copies either Ntoskrnl.exe or Ntkrnlmp.exe to your system as Ntoskrnl.exe. In Recovery Console, you can use the Copy command to copy the correct HAL or kernel files from the CD to the appropriate folder on the hard disk.
If you experience Stop 0x79 messages after changing firmware settings, restore the original settings used during Windows XP Professional Setup.
Because systems that use the ACPI HAL ignore IRQ assignments stored in firmware, you can only manually change IRQ settings for non-ACPI (Standard PC HAL) systems. Some x86-based provide the option to toggle ACPI functionality. To disable or re-enable ACPI, you must change firmware settings and reinstall Windows XP. Because of the numerous registry and system file changes required, you must run Setup again (an upgrade installation does not work).

Stop 0x0000007A or KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

The Stop 0x7A message indicates that a page of kernel data was not found in the paging (virtual memory) file and could not be read into memory. This might be due to incompatible disk or controller drivers, firmware, or hardware.
Frequently, the cause of this error can be determined from the second parameter, the I/O status code. Some common status codes are:
0xC000009A, or STATUS_INSUFFICIENT_RESOURCES, indicates a lack of nonpaged pool resources.
0xC000009C, or STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR, indicates bad blocks (sectors) on the hard disk.

Stop 0x0000007B or INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

The Stop 0x7B message indicates that Windows XP has lost access to the system partition or boot volume during the startup process. Installing incorrect device drivers when installing or upgrading storage adapter hardware typically causes stop 0x7B errors. Stop 0x7B errors could also indicate possible virus infection.
The second parameter is very important because it can indicate whether the 0x7B Stop message was caused by file system issues or problems with storage hardware and drivers. Values of 0xC000034 or 0xC000000E typically indicate:
Disks or storage controllers that are failing, defective, or improperly configured.
Storage-related drivers or programs (tape management software, for example) that are not fully compatible with Windows XP Professional.
Possible Resolutions:
During I/O system initialization, the controller or driver for the startup device (typically the hard disk) might have failed to initialize the necessary hardware. File system initialization might have failed because of disk or controller failure, or because the file system did not recognize the data on the boot device.
Repartitioning disks, adding new disks, or upgrading to a new disk controller might cause the information in the Boot.ini file, or Boot Manager, to become outdated. If this Stop message occurs after installing new disks to your system, edit the Boot.ini file or adjust the Boot Manager parameters to allow the system to start. If the error occurs after upgrading the disk controller, verify that the new hardware is functioning and correctly configured.
Verify that the system firmware and disk controller BIOS settings are correct and that the storage device was properly installed. If you are unsure, consult your computer's documentation about restoring default firmware settings or configuring your system to auto-detect settings. If the error occurs during Windows XP Professional setup, the problem might be due to unsupported disk controller hardware. In some cases, drivers for new hardware are not in the Windows XP Professional Driver.cab library, and you need to provide additional drivers to complete the Windows XP setup successfully. If this is the case, follow the hardware manufacturer's instructions when installing drivers. Periodically check for driver and firmware updates.

If the original file from the operating system CD has a file name that ends with an underscore (_) character, you cannot use the file until it is uncompressed. The Recovery Console's Copy command is ideal for copying compressed files because it detects and expands them. If you do not specify a destination file name, you must rename the expanded file with the correct extension before using it. From safe mode or Recovery Console, you can use the Expand command to uncompress and copy a file to a destination location. In Recovery Console, the expanded file is given the correct name after being copied to the destination location. How to recover MOST of scratched CD / DVD data discs

I learn an old technique to how to recover damaged or scratched disks with some lost of data. In this case i have one game CD - MAX PAYNE 2 with a chuck of 4 mb lost with a scratch in CD1 Install.
Here I covered some special techniques of how to create a full working CD from the scratched one.

First some tools will be needed:
1. Alcohol 120% - To create ISO images of a CD
2. UltraISO - To read ISO images and scratched CD
3. Windows XP/2000 (not tested on 95/98/me)
3. Small piece of cotton
4. Dry cleaner paper
5. Finally, oil for cooking.

First step - preparing the CD
Get the cotton and drop some water, start cleaning vertically the surface of CD. Do it 3 times and dry the water with a piece of dry cleaner paper. With a new piece of cotton, drop some oil for cooking and start to wet the surface like you are washing the CD with the oil. Dry carefully now. Some particles of oil will stay on the microsurface of the scratch. It's okay. Seems the oil helps the laser of the CD/DVD driver to read the surface again. Sure this will work with small unreadable scratchs - some hard scratches loose parts of the surface of the CD where we have data and it's lost forever. But if it is loosed try anyway. with this tip 80% of the small scratched CD's coud be recovered.

Second Step - testing the CD
With Alcohol 120% make an ISO - image making wizard - and lets see if the app can read the loosed surface. In my case Alcohol 120% had recovered 60% of the data. This is not enough. Have tried other applications, they do not recover all the data. But the CD/DVD driver laser CAN recover all data in this case. the data is still there, what we do?

third step - making the new CD
With the main copy system of windows explorer you can do it. Just create one folder with the same name of the CD label for future burn reference, and copy the CD content to the folder. When the CD copy process find the scratch, in majority of the cases, it's slow down the reading and will recover ALL loosed data.If not, it just tell you there's an unreadable sector. In this case your CD is lost. But it's not

How to Disable Onboard/Integrated Video On Your Computer

This article describes general procedure in disabling the onboard or integrated video solution present on many modern motherboards.
Disabling this is sometimes necessary to prevent conflicts with AGP, PCI and PCI-E Video cards and to ensure that the accelerator is being detected correctly by the BIOS of the motherboard.

Steps
Read the documentation that came along with your motherboard first. Because the actual switch for disabling the onboard video could be a physical jumper OR a software BIOS setting, be sure you know the correct jumper (often labeled on the PCB, or how to change settings in your systems' BIOS.

Install any devices and drivers for the other video card device, connecting any power molex cables to the power supply of your computer, and the most recent drivers downloaded from the manufacturer's website of your card.

Plug in the monitor to the port located on the motherboard first, otherwise you may not get a picture at all.

According to your documentation, find out if you need to open (or close) a jumper on the motherboard to disable the video, or if it is a BIOS Setting.
Change the jumper (opening or closing it as needed) on the mainboard while the system is powered off and unplugged from the wall, or go into BIOS and change the Primary Video toto PCI/AGP based on the card.

Often there is also a setting in BIOS on newer boards that allows the user to set either a PCI card or AGP card as the primary video device. Make sure this is set to your video card.

Save Settings and Exit BIOS, if you had to change settings here.
Power off the system entirely, unplugging it from the wall. Change your Monitor cable from the motherboard connector to the primary Display out on the back of the video card. This should be designated with a 0 or 1 in the event the card has dual-display capability.

Turn on your system. If you receive a video signal, congratulations, you're done!

If you do not receive a video signal, listen carefully for the normal beep that indicates a successful POST. (Power On Self Test). If there is one beep, turn the system off and plug the cable back into the motherboard display port. If you now receive a video signal, check your BIOS Settings or Jumper settings once again. If you still have difficulties, or you do not receive any signal on either port, then read your documentation on how to reset BIOS or change the jumper back to its original position.

Always check your documentation (read the manual) for detailed instructions on how to do this.
Documentation on this process and related troubleshooting can often be found on the manufacturers' website for your mainboard.
Newer motherboards will often automatically detect and use a video card for the primary display adapter, instead of using the onboard video.

First Trick
Open a Command Prompt window and leave it open.
Close all open programs.
Click Start, Run and enter TASKMGR.EXE or Open Taskmanager
Go to the Processes tab and End Process on Explorer.exe.
Leave Task Manager open.
Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory the ex: AVI (or other undeletable file) is located in.
At the command prompt type DEL where is the file you wish to delete.
Go back to Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the GUI shell.

Second Trick
Open Notepad.exe
Click File>Save As..>locate the folder where ur undeletable file is
Choose 'All files' from the file type box
click once on the file u wanna delete
so its name appears in the 'filename' box
put a " at the start and end of the filename(the filename should have the extension of the undeletable file so it will overwrite it)
click save,
It should ask u to overwrite the existing file,
choose yes and u can delete it as normal

Here's a manual way of doing it.
1. Start->Run->command
2. To move into a directory type: cd c:\*** (The stars stand for your folder)
3. If you cannot access the folder because it has spaces for example Program Files or Kazaa Lite folder you have to do the following, instead of typing in the full folder name only take the first 6 letters then put a '~'(without quotes) and then 1 without spaces.
Example: cd c:\progra~1\kazaal~1
4. Once your in the folder the non-deletable file it in type in dir - a list will come up with everything inside.
5. Now to delete the file type in del ***.bmp, txt, jpg, avi, etc... And if the file name has spaces you would use the special 1st 6 letters followed by a ~ and a 1 rule.

Example: if your file name was bad file.bmp you would type once in the specific folder thorugh command, del badfil~1.bmp and your file should be gone. Make sure to type in the correct extension.

How to recover deleted OUTLOOK " .pst " file

The following method works only on PSTs, when it works.

Things to remember:

This works under very limited circumstances
If the PST has begun compacting, it will likely fail
You're better off NOT emptying the deleted folder until you are sure you won't need the messages
Don't store messages in the folder unless you are sure the messages are trash

If, for some stupid reason you move items to the deleted folder and change your mind after emptying the Deleted Items folder, you may be able to recover the messages under very specific conditions.

When the above method fails, you may be able to recover the deleted message using a commercial product, Stellar Phoenix Mailbox Professional - PST Recovery Software.

How Outlook's Deleted Items folder works

A PST is a database. Items are records within the database and there is an index that points to each item. When you empty the Deleted Items folder, Outlook doesn't actually delete the items, it just deletes the items' listings from the index. The item is still in the PST, but unrecoverable because Outlook has no idea where it is without the pointer in the index. The space the item takes up is called "whitespace".

When you Compact a PST, the item is finally removed permanently and the whitespace is recovered, often shrinking the PST by many megabytes. Once the PST has 20% "whitespace", Outlook begins compacting the PST. If the Deleted Items folder contained a lot of messages, Outlook may begin compacting the PST immediately and the items will be deleted forever within a few minutes.

To recover the items which are no longer in the index you need to force Outlook to rebuild the index by causing corruption. You can cause corruption by using a Hex editor to delete some characters from the beginning of the PST file. If you delete the wrong ones you'll cause corruption but not in the index and Outlook won't rebuild the index.

Recover the Deleted Items

If you don't know what a Hex editor is, you probably shouldn't be hex editing anything, but if you want to try, Google for "hex editor" - UltraEdit is probably the best and easiest one to use. Before doing anything to the PST with a Hex Editor, make a copy of the PST, or you may end up losing all of your e-mail.

Open the PST in the Hex editor.
Delete positions 7 through 13 with the spacebar. Since you're using hexadecimal numbering, this actually clears 13 characters in the following positions:
00007, 00008, 00009, 0000a, 0000b, 0000c, 0000d
0000e, 0000f, 00010, 00011, 00012, 00013
As you clear the characters, the editor displays the code “20” in their position.

Save the PST, it is now corrupted.
Run the Inbox Repair Tool, SCANPST.exe, to recover the file. Use Windows Search utility to find it. For additional information on the Inbox Repair Tool, see KB article 287497
The Inbox Repair Tool creates a backup and repairs the damage and recreates the PST.

Open the new PST in Outlook. The Deleted Items folder should now contain the deleted messages, unless Outlook has already deleted them for good by compacting the PST.

Two virus rankings have been compiled as a result of Kaspersky Security Network (KSN) activity in September.

The first ranking represents the most widespread malware, adware and potentially unwanted programs according to the number of computers they were detected on.

KSN recorded a change at the top of the rankings in September for the most widespread malicious and potentially unwanted programs. The former leader, Trojan.Win32.DNSChanger.ech, is nowhere to be seen and a wholly unexpected piece of code claimed first place.

The new leader turned out to be Rootkit.Win32.Agent.cvx. It was detected by our experts on 28 August and throughout the month it actively spread across the internet. Two factors have set the alarm bells ringing: first of all, rootkits are notoriously awkward customers for antivirus software and, secondly, very few antivirus programs, as yet, can detect this particular specimen.

Another unusual malicious program, Trojan-Downloader.WMA.Wimad.n, returned to second place. This multimedia file exploits a vulnerability in Windows Media Player to download various Trojans.

A significant amount of the attacks on users stem from various script downloaders, with a total of four in September’s rankings. These scripts act as the “trigger” for the majority of “drive-by download” attacks. By the way, Wimad.n functions by using exactly these types of Trojan Downloaders.

Interestingly, not only have all the adware programs from last month remained in the Top Twenty some of them have even consolidated their positions.

September’s ranking only saw nine new entries (compared to 16 in August). Among them is the veteran worm of the virus world Brontok.q in eighteenth place. Attentive readers who have been following our monthly reports for some time will be familiar with this worm which has consistently figured in our rankings, even when they were compiled using different data sources and methodologies.

All the malware, adware and potentially unwanted programs from this ranking can be broken down into the four main categories of threats that we detect. Trojans remain the clear leader, but their share has fallen from 80 to 70%.

A total of 35103 different malicious and potentially unwanted programs were detected on users’ computers in September. That represents another significant increase in the number of in-the-wild threats for the second month in a row (the figure for August was 28940).

The second table provides data about the most common malicious programs among all infected objects detected on users’ computers. The majority of the programs listed below have file-infection capabilities.

The changes to this ranking were minimal – only four new entries. But there was a change at the top. Nimda, which unexpectedly claimed first place in August, has fallen to second, making way for its nearest rival, the Xorer.du file virus.

September saw yet another member of the Sality family enter this ranking, bringing their number up to four, including Sality.aa in fifth place.

Mabezat.b has become another worm to be reckoned with. It initially showed no significant activity after being detected in November of last year, as it probably went about gradually increasing the number of infected machines and files. Now it has popped up in third place.

Overall, it has to be said that the state of virus and worm activity is rather stable and shows no signs of getting worse. According to KSN data, a number of malicious programs that infect files have been significantly curtailed over the last three months, which is borne out in the examples of the Allaple and Otwycal families falling off of our ranking.

Technical details

This worm spreads via the Internet as an attachment to infected messages. It is also able to propagate via P2P networks and accessible http and ftp directories.

The worm's main component is a PE EXE file of approximately 29KB. The worm is packed using FSG; the unpacked file is approximately 40KB in size.

Installation

The worm copies itself to the Windows directory under the name fvprotect.exe and registers this file in the system registry autorun key:

The worm also creates a file named userconfig9x.dll in the Windows directory, and files with the following names:

These files are copies of the worm in UEE format and ZIP archives containing copies of the worm. Files within the archive will have names chosen from the following list:

The worm creates a mutex, ""_-oO]xX|-S-k-y-N-e-t-|Xx[Oo-_", to flag its presence in the system.

Having your computer infected with viruses and trojans is a frustrating experience. With the massive usage of pen drives, the viruses are having their day giggling with their kind of fun than in the past. The use of USB pen-drives and removable storage devices from one computer to another increases the rate of virus infection.

Sometimes even if you say that you cleaned it either by top of the line anti-virus softwares (most of the time they do not even detect them) or by formating the pen-drive itself, the infected pen-drive failed to heal. 5 Essential laptop security tips

Tip #1: Never leave any passwords in your laptop case. If you do keep your passwords with your laptop, it’s much like keeping the keys in your car. Remember that without your passwords, it will be more difficult to unlock your computer and access your personal information.

Tip #2: Laptop theft is a crime of opportunity.Always take your laptop with you, and always keep your eye on it. For instance, if you’re meeting someone, lock your laptop in the trunk and make sure it’s stored out of the sight. Further more, try not to leave your laptop in an accessible area, such as your hotel’s front desk. If you do have a safe or a security cable, use it.

Tip #3: Have sensitive data? Encrypt it. If someone gets your laptop and gains access to your files, encryption can give you an extra layer of protection. Programs such as TrueCrypt make the job very easy. Windows users can use Encrypted File System (EFS) to encrypt files and folders.

Tip #4: Password protect your systems. Every laptop user should protect their laptop with startup passwords. Set a BIOS password to lock the system before the operating system even starts.Windows users can set a password to start Windows. Remember that startup passwords will prohibit any access to the computer at all.

Make sure you choose a good password - make it a long one and complex. Only hard-to-guess passwords will prevent thieves from guessing your password. If your laptop supports biometric authentication, you should use your fingerprint in place of a password.

Tip #5: If the worse happens, and your laptop does get stolen, wouldn’t it be great if you could trace it? There are companies that offer tracking software, allowing the stolen laptop to send its location (for example, LaptopLock). Unfortunately, those programs work only when the stolen laptop connects to the Internet.

Go to that file type under [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT], create a subkey named
ShellNew and create the string-value File Name in it. Change this
string's value to the blank document's filename.

Ex: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.wav\ShellNew\FileName], and FileName's value = "sndrec.wav".

Remove Item Types

Read Add Item Types, and delete or rename the subkey named ShellNew. Hit F5 to update the items in the New submenu.

Save color scheme

Export [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Appearance\Schemes\{Name of Scheme}]

Create tool tips for desktop icons.

Search the registry for keys with the name Info Tip. You may replace the descriptions and you may add Info Tip keys for other Class-IDs.

Create a button to Reboot Windows XP

To create a reboot icon on your desktop: Right click on an open area of the desktop Select New/Shortcut Enter in

"shutdown -r -t 00" - no quotes Press Next For the name, enter Reboot or anything you like.

Click Finish.

Remove Shortcut arrow from Desktop icons

Here are the steps to perform:-

Logic: the server has a major bug in it, by which it fails to block two simultaneous connections from the phone and establishes a connection with full internet working,

Supported devices: all phones with multichannel gprs support

For connection on your mobile phone:-

1) Make two connections like bsnlportal and BSNLPORTAL1

(names of profile don’t matter, u can keep one as billgates and shahrukhkhan lol..the basic purpose of names is to enable the user to differentiate between the two accounts,)

2) Select the application you got to have the full connection working on.
Surpassingly “web” now just select “bsnlportal” profile and select a link like wap.cellone.in the page will get open, just press the red button such that the “web” application goes in the background.
Make sure that the gprs connection is still established with the web app. Two parallel lines on the top left of the screen will confirm this

3) Now open any other app that requires web connection like opera. Select BSNLPORTAL and open any other link like wap.google.com, u will get error –

the aim of using the other app is to perform multi-channel gprs,
this is verified by seeing some dots on the pre-existing connection established by “web”

(step 2)

“Access denied.

4) close opera and open web and open a site like esato.com

5) if everything is done as said here then esato will load and voila! We have the whole internet!

Browser Speed Tests: The Compiled, Up-to-Date Results

Back when Firefox 3's final release candidate dropped, we ran some tests to compare its page-loading, memory use, and technical timing to Internet Explorer 7, Opera, and Safari for Windows. Then Google Chrome arrived, so we pitted it against the betas for Firefox 3.1 and Internet Explorer 8, and shared the results. The tests were by and large the same, but many commenters wisely asked to see all the results, betas or no betas. Well, today we've patched together all our data, thrown in a fresh test of the Opera 9.6 beta, and we're sharing all the graphy goodness. Read on to see a full comparison of the major browsers you can load on Windows.

The tests

You can read up on our testing methods in their entirety at the original testing feature. I've come to realize, however, that between all three rounds of testing involved, the "8-page load" test may be the most vulnerable to variables—some of the pages included are quite dynamic, so if, say, Gizmodo puts up a large number of videos or huge pictures, it could affect the total loading time. Other than that, though, the page-loading tests are run by a human watching a timer, the JavaScript from Sean Patrick Kane's web test, the CSS from a downloadable form, and memory use from checking Windows Vista's Task Manager.

Test 1: Page Loading—Winner: Opera (9.5)!

No surprise that Opera 9.6's beta performed just as well as the official release, on start-ups both both cold (right after boot-up) and warm (having launched at least once). I'm heartened to see comparable results between the first batch of browsers I tested and their newer betas.

The next speed test, loading eight pages from a bookmark folder, left me scratching my head. Why did the newer betas take so much longer to load a similar set of pages? As stated above, my best guess is the dynamic nature of at least one page in the group, but Opera was tested separately from the other betas, and didn't gain much in speed.

Test 2: JavaScript & CSS—Winner: Safari! (by a nose)

It's hard to beat Safari's performance in both Cascading Style Sheets and the JavaScript code that fronts so many webapps. It has to be noted, however, that most browsers, other than Internet Explorer, don't out-run one another by a huge stretch in JavaScript; Chrome and Safari, though, pull ahead on CSS.

Test 3: Memory Use—Winner: Firefox!

It's reassuring that Mozilla puts so much effort into memory usage in Firefox 3 releases—seeing as how most readers of this site are more than open to extension suggestions.

Why would you ever want to reinstall Windows XP?

1. Can't start Windows XP in safe mode.

2. You have problems caused by a recently installed system update (Windows Update, hotfix, Windows XP service pack, or
Microsoft Internet Explorer update).

3. Your problems can't be solved with system restore, or you can't access system restore.

4. You've installed a new motherboard, or made other major hardware changes and need to reinstall Windows.

effort...

Repair Windows XP Installation: Step-by-step:

1: Make certain there are no known hardware issues. Windows repair will ONLY fix software problems. Hardware issues can also
cause boot problems (i.e. bad hard drive, memory, CPU, or power supply).

2: Make Sure & Backup Your Data. It's always a good idea to backup your important data before making changes to Windows XP.
Don't worry, if you follow these instructions your data will be secure and there for you when the windows xp repair is completed.

3: Boot from your Windows XP CD. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your
computer. When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message appears on the screen, press a key to start your computer from
the Windows XP CD.

4: A blue screen will appear and begin loading Windows XP Setup from the CD.

Note: RAID/SCSI/Unsupported UDMA users:

You will be prompted to "press F6 to install any third party SCSI or RAID drivers". Most users will not have to press F6, but
if you are running RAID, SCSI or unsupported UDMA controllers, then you will have to have your controller drivers on a floppy
disk. If you are unsure whether you have RAID/SCSI, then simply let the CD load without pressing F6.

When completed loading files, you will be presented with the following "Windows Setup" screen, and your first option. Select
"To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER". DO NOT select Recovery Console.

When presented with the End User License agreement screen. press the F8 key to continue.

Next, Windows Setup will find existing Windows XP installations. You will be asked to repair an existing XP installation, or
install a fresh copy of Windows XP.

If no installations are found, then you will not be given the option to repair. This may happen if the data or partition on
your drive is too corrupted.

Note: If you install a fresh copy, all data on that partition will be lost!

You are almost through! Windows XP will look like it is installing itself for the first time, but it will keep and
remember all of your data and settings. Just follow the prompts, and have your CD-KEY ready if needed.
